Default Disco 1 Transfer case issue??

Hey guys.. New to the Forum. Tried doing a search for my issue but there were many posts that didnt describe my symptoms specifically. So im driving around my D1 When all of a sudden i am not getting any power to any of the 4 wheels... I immediately think some kind of transmission issue but i can hear the tranny shift with not grinding but i do hear a very light grinding noise while its on D. I Tried shifting the transfer case to 4 hi locked and voila... it runs.. drive it to a buddies house thats a couple of blocks away and we lift it off the ground. This is where im kinda stumped as to wether its the transfer case or one of the front or rear drive shafts.. All 4 wheels off the ground on regular 4hi... no power to any of the 4 wheels. 4lo power to rear wheels nothing to the front wheels.... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks in advance!

Def sounds like a t-case issue.
The only rear wheels moving while all four wheels are off the ground is normal, no matter hi or lo, center diff locked and all four wheels should turn no matter hi or lo range.
Drain the t-case, remove the inspection cover and have a look.

Hey Spike... Thanks for the quick response. I figured only the rear would spin under high or low but with the diff locked only the rear spun.. (should have been all 4 if they were locked right?) Either case i guess ill take it apart this weekend and see what i find..

You didnt say you had it locked, if you did I missed it.
So yes, locked all four wheels should spin.
Let us know what you find.

I thought the Discovery was full-time 4wd and the CDL just locks the front & rear axles so all wheels turn at the same rpm?

When the CDL is locked, the front and rear drive shafts both receive power. Each axle also has a differential so the power will go to the wheel which spins most freely. Basically with the CDL locked, one front AND one rear wheel will have power ("chosen" by the axle diffs). When the CDL is not locked power will find the ONE wheel which slips first.

So I checked inside the transfer case via access panel and actually does not appear to be in bad shape. Took apart front end and front driver side CV joint was completely destroyed. Have a new one on order would this cause the issue I was experiencing?

It covers the grinding noise for sure. Did you check the passenger side too?

I did... Passenger side did not look bad but i ordered a new one for it also just to be on the safe side. Plus i had already taken it apart so it was a "why not" decision.. Hoping this will be the issue..
