Default Do you actually drain coolant to replace water pump

I know the rave manual says to drain cool an to pull and replace the water pump, but do you guys actually drain the coolant? Most of the quick write-ups I see here and elsewhere skip this sep. If I can ever get this stupid fan clutch off....

most of it will come out anyway so better to do it in a controlled way rather than have it gush all over the place. eventually the coolant will become corrosive to the aluminum engine so frequent changes are a good thing

Less mess if you drain as mentioned
I found the easiest way to stop the pulley spin for fan clutch.
I stuffed a leather sheath from a small axe between pulley and belt, that locked it up and I did not even get to use the bfh approach.. The nut broke loose with wrench only

It's not like there is actually a way to drain the coolant in a controlled manner. The best you get is pulling the bottom hose which still makes a mess.
I say just stick a shallow Rubbermaid tote under the truck and pull the water pump.

On a D1 there is.

Just get one of these Multi-Use Transfer Pump, stick it in the radiator and pump it out.

i use a gallon hand pump with a piece of tubing and pump all the coolant from the expansion tank then from the top of the rad. usually takes about five mintues but its controlled and doesnt make a mess at all and once you get it going it will siphon itself mostly.
