Default Does the 1995 have HG problem

Friend has offered to me his 95 Disco in good shape with 240,000 kms (140,000 hwy miles.) Wife has always like the look of them, which is a big plus.

My biggest concern is the headgasket. I will start it up next week with a jump, but no signs of sludge etc cold. The rest of vehicle is very clean, rustfree. He put a new brush guard on for looks a couple of years ago cost $1000.00 He doesn't want much more than that for the vehicle. If the history is good what can one expect for mileage life on this engine. How strong is this year if maintained
I have older jags so know what British vehicles can be like and attention they demand.

It wouldn't be our main vehicle, more for short trips and safe for our young drivers especially in winter.

Thanks Kevin

If the head gaskets were to go bad they would have done so by now.
And if they do go, its not big deal.
A '95 will have a distributor and be OBDI compliant.
Premium fuel is a must.

Default I am totally biased!!

If you can pick up a '95 with a good maint. history and no rust then you will have yourself one of the best model years they made.

Great 3rd vehicle! That what my Disco is. I bought mine with 94k and a blown head gasket. Yes, they are susceptible to blown head gaskets.
For $500 I had freshened heads and all the parts to put it back together - doing all the work myself.
In any case, hard to beat for $1000-ish. 1995 is a great year - nothing but a slightly longer Defender 90! She's a beast!

A follow up

Went back to look a the 95 Disco. Checked connections and attempted to start....just a clicking sound, like bad connection or low battery. Then put jumper cables on, tried to start....nothing, no clicking or turning....cables really heating up.

Owner, who is a friend, states that a mechanic replaced the starter, work was done in his driveway and it does look new. Doesn't know if it was new or rebuilt or if the truck actually started after the repair. They have many other vehicles and don't drive the L/R.

Could be wrong starter?
Could be connected wrong?
Could be bad starter?

Ran out of daylight, but thought I would throw this out at the forum for ideas.
Is removing it and get it tested the logical thing to do or is there other tests one can perform first.

toasted battery? My battery shorted internally and even a jump wouldn't turn it.

If it was heating the cables up that is a lot of current draw. If battery is toast that would explain it. Take a different battery over and try it after removing the existing one.

Also those ground connections can cause it not to start and make you think you got abad starter, so check them out. Take an ohmmeter with you if you got one.

I would love to have a good 95 because that is prior to emission requirements here in PA.

What exactly does that mean Danny? I just got my '95 running (the one from Craigslist in the 'burgh this past spring) and I have the 3 amigos. I was going to get to work on them so I could get it inspected (in PA).
