Default Does the Discovery shift **** come off?

I have removed all retainers but it appears to be molded to the shift arm of the transmission selector. How does one replace the worn-out "P, R, N, D, 2, 1" plastic slide material? I have a 1996 & 1997 and they are both in need of replacement.

This is great news, but I see no trace of an allen head set screw anywhere. I have checked the entire rubber surface of the ****, looked under the cover at the shaft and no hint of a way to remove it! I have the **** and the shaft down to the pivot point. It would seem a simple task not requiring more disassembly to remove the plastic housing. I need to remove the malfunctioning interlock mechanism (locks in Park position)so I can take it for its smog test, run in the Park position! I can drive it but have to manually disengage the solenoid plunger if I go into Park position. Almost there with one more hint!

First, are you sure your brake light switch isn't bad? A faulty brake light switch won't disengage the interlock solenoid and you'll be stuck in Park.
Second, from memory removing the shifter **** is pretty straightforward. Pop the cover off with a small flat tip screwdriver. Then there's a C-clip I think. Then a nut you need to unscrew. After that the **** just pulls up and off.

I've never seen a set screw on my 97 or 96's

Edit: I have had them stuck on before though where you just have to give them a good tug or tap with something to get them loose.

On mine there is a plastic cap (the dotted part on top) that you can pop off.. then theres a slide clip underneath to remove the ****.
