Default drive shaft splines coated with plastic?

the splines on my rear driveshaft yoke are coated with plastic. I had to beat the yoke off with a 5 lbs sledge hammer and its not going back on easy with that plastic coating. I guess it's there to protect the metal but its making it really hard to install drive shaft since I can't compress or extend shaft.

I'm thinking about removing the plastic..has anybody did this?

hey I'm covered with grease and I have been beating on this drive shaft for the past hour so give me a break on the grammatical errors

anyways, its called a glide coat and it's non-replaceable..you have to buy a new yoke...how dumb is that?

from what I've read so far it's made out of teflon and it's there to keep the shaft quiet and take out any play...if you remove it theres a chance the yokes days will be numbered and the shaft will make more noise

well it was starting to peel in places and after beating it back into shaft it peeled even more...i had to remove it all...torch and wire brush. I guess we'll see how long my yoke last without it.

I would think without it you'll have significant radial play in the propshaft between the slip yoke and tube.

it fits fairly tight now but I can see how over time It might loosen up. This rover will not driven daily, so maybe it will be a long time before I need a new yoke. I had no other option, once that glide coat starts to peel re-installing the yoke into shaft just makes it peel more.

also, I don't like drive line components I have to beat with a sledge hammer in a vise. I prefer a little bit of play so I can get it apart on the trail if need be.

True, beating anything off with a five pound sledge is rarely ever fun.
