Default dropped oil pick-up and never looked back...

Hi Guys,

After trying to figure out why my car has been so dang noisy and prone to overheating I dropped the oil pan today and found that the oil pick up was no where to be seen. It was laying neatly on the bottom of the oil pan next to it's 2 bolts.

I hope I didn't totally fry my engine and I hope that my oil pump still works. I probably drove 12 hours through mountains and deserts in this condition.

I found that the oil sender wire has been broken off and evidently the oil light just doesn't work.

I will just use some red locktite on the oil pick up bolts since I don't have the stuff mentioned in the RAVE.

I've heard that it's a good idea to check the status of your oil pick up and would highly recommend you doing that!

.....well that explained why the top end looked so bone dry.

Hi ihschouts,

I noticed when I had the shaft assembly off on the top end that there were these little holes over two of the four rocker shaft assembly bolts. It seemed like this is where the oil may be pumped in from to the rocker shaft. Is that right? I'm afraid they may be caked up with dried oil now.

Is there a way I can check to see if my top end is getting oil? Should I run it without the covers?

I don't understand exactly how oil is pumped into the top end.

I'll tell ya what Ray, any wear that has occurred cannot be put back. Start the motor and let it go for awhile at idle. I can't believe it has survived this long so a few more minutes of pseudo masochism should bring it even more painful joy. No point in getting touchy feely with it. It's life has been shortened by a few miles. When the ticking has quieted take it for an easy walk around the block and then park it and reopen the valve cover. Then we can talk.

After attaching the oil pick up on start up she was loud as hell! Tap tap tap tap tap!!!!! But then after a few minutes she got a little quieter... and quieter and... Well, hell, she's never sounded so good!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes!!!!! She's purring like a damned Bengal tiger.

So, if anyone ever asks you the question if your Discovery I can drive 700 miles in 100 degree weather WITHOUT an oil pick up... the answer is YES! All you have to do is make sure she doesn't over heat and reattach the pick up when you can.

My next project will be getting a new oil sender wire or something like that to make my oil light work.

It's really too early to get too excited but I'm feeling pretty good about my disco.

you should make an offer to the Rover Gods.

I would install a oil gauge and check youR PCV system.
if your crankcase was venting properly I don't see anyway the pump could create enough suction without a pickup tube to give you oil pressure


your a lucky man.

I will look into installing a gauge. That would be pretty cool. I will look around to see how to do it. I've seen some pics of where guys put the gauge under the hood with the engine but I would hope to be able to have it on or under the dash somewhere.

I'll look into the PVC system but I don't think there was much oil pressure at all. One thing I did have was an over full oil level. This might have helped with my crankshaft etc.

After my trip I did remove the right rocker cover and found the PVC filter was completely plugged up with oil and grime. I unplugged it off course. I will have to look at the PVC intake on the other cover.

Although my engine seems to be running well now the idle is quite a bit higher.

It's "PCV" guys = Positive Crankcase Ventilation......

"PVC" = Polyvinyl Chloride....

I'm a little scared. When I first started my engine after putting everything back together my engine idled well. But now it's idling at 1000-1500rpm! Man, I don't know...

Today my starter died... I'll get a new one tomorrow and install it. Man that was kind of a pain in the *** removing that darned starter...
