Default Failing key fobs

You know my list of maintenance tasks is drawing short when I’m asking about key fobs, but here we are.

My key fobs seem to only work <10ft from the vehicle, and not from all sides. I’ve replaced both remote batteries to no avail, in fact recently one of them stopped working completely, even with a new battery. Go figure. I know I’m going to get shamed for asking about this, but does anyone have any knowledge on the central locking system in these cars? I can’t really find any info on it. Where is the brain of the system located? Is there an antenna?

My whole central locking system is fairly sluggish. When I push down the driver’s lock, it takes a second or two for the rest to follow suit. Also, I can’t seem to find a way to lock the car with the driver door open - that is, to lock it and walk away without the key. I know this is meant to be a fool-proof system, but most cars let you get around it if you’re pulling the inside latch lever or something similar. Doesn’t work for me, maybe I’m missing something.

If you are locking/unlocking your Disco 1 from 10 feet away, you are doing better than me.
I have to be almost 4 feet from my Disco 2 to lock/unlock it with the fob (with new batteries mind you). If I hold the fob under my chin (I saw this on MythBusters tv show to increase the range) I can sometimes get it to work from 8 feet away.

I've had the same concerns on this matter. I tried the under the chin approach and it does work but I don't want to be holding this remote like this.

I wonder if its possible to wire a stronger antenna to our remote module for a range increase because for now I'm practically on the car when the remote does work.

Thanks

10 feet!!! My God that’s amazing. I gotta be damn near sitting on the hood. I’ve been wondering too how to get a new one? I have a sick feeling it’d require a trip to the dealer and multiple hundred dollar bills.

I have to say, the under-the-chin thing really works, and I have no idea why. It’s black magic.

With the electromagnetic properties from within you become the antenna.

I can't find it now but there was a thread on this forum or Dweb about soldering a short piece of wire to a certain point inside the fob that would effectively extend the antennae of the fob and extend the range. The problem is that I can't find the thread because "key" and "fob" and everything else I tried are too short to search.

With a little google-fu, I found these.

I soldered a wire to the remote. Sadly I didn't get a range increase
