Default Fan Clutch from Hell

Hi all,

I’ve removed my fan clutch before, but I think I must be going crazy. I’ve spent about an hour wrenching and hammering on this thing with no progress so I just wanted to run it all by you.

I’m using the proper sized wrench, I’m using a wrench tool from O’Reilly’s which frequently slips off the bolts of the water pump pulley. I’ve also soaked the fan clutch nut in PB blaster.

While standing in front of the Land Rover, facing the front of the Land Rover I’m turning my wrench to the right in a left-hand drive vehicle. This is the correct way to loosen the nut because it’s reverse thread?

Lastly, the Rave manual tells you to remove the fan clutch to replace the steering pump. Can anyone verify if it’s necessary to remove the fan clutch to be able to change out the steering pump?

Thanks

it is a right hand thread according to the RAVE manual.

tap the wrench to the left as you are standing in front of the Rover facing the rear of the Rover. counter-clockwise when standing in front of the Rover.

@DiscoNewbe i just replaced my steering pump last weekend and did not remove the fan. It’s a little harder but can be done. Loosen the 3 bolts on the pump before you remove the belt.

I put a dab of anti-seize on it when re-installing the fan/clutch.

Disconewbe,

you are looking at the Viscous Fan removal for the TDI engine.

the RAVE manual has both the TDI and petrol/gasoline V8i in it. it can be confusing at times.
