Default Fitting a roof tent

Hi guys an girls. I’ve got a disco 1 1997. I’m trying to fit a roof rack and roof tent but says I can only go up to 50kg limit on the roof and all the companies I’ve been messaging about roof racks says the roof bars can only hold what your roof can hold (50kg) was wondering if thats them covering themselves? Would the roof take a rack of 30kg a tent of 40kg and 2 people of 80kg or do I have to get a new car to be able to camp on the roof 😂 thanks

I think the quoted limit would be for travelling, not while parking at your campsite. I think it means 50 kg is ok while in motion on rough roads, or at high speeds on the highway.

Finally! a question on the form I can be some help with! So, I have had a Baja rack with the flat rear basket and a Smitty built XL roof top tent for the better part of two years now. No issues have come up with it. we sleep two adults in the roof top tent as well as all our overnight bags ect. It holds the weight A ok. Only real problem is it will make it top heavy and limits me from some overlanding obstacles that without the tent and roof rack it could have handled no problems before. So as long as you are aware and ok with limiting your off-road potential for fear of tipping over then go for it! I take air out of the tires to level the vehicle and chock the tires to keep everything in place.

the biggest negative I can think of to roof top tent - or any attached shelter to the vehicle is you must pack it all up to run to the store if you need something - no one can stay at camp.
