Question Front Drive Shaft

My front propshaft just broke and I am going to replace. Any recommendations? I have a Great Basin Rover's shaft in my D2, no complaints, just wondering what experiences you some of you may have had.

I too am looking to upgrade my front driveshaft. I've been eyeing the Tom Woods front driveshafts. Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts - Landrover Application The double cardan looks like the best bet but i haven't gone through the whole process to receive a quote yet. Also if you talk to Simon at RTE (http://www.rte-fab.com/) he has everything you need.

Would you go with double cardan or two joint? What are the pros and cons of both? I use my car for daily driving ( not exactly my daily but I drive it a lot) and a lot of technical trail riding. It is factory ride hight with factory sized road tires. Haven't run into anything thats stopped it yet, just want to make sure if something does it isn't a driveshaft that I have already replaced.

If you are at stock height with relatively normal wheels/tires just get another standard front shaft.

Even if I do use the truck and put pretty significant force on the driveshaft? I know I my truck sits around stock but that doesn't keep me from getting hard use out of it haha. Truck is very capable, I would hate to replace it with the same one that in there only to break it too. Thanks

Any reason you would go with Tom Woods over Great Basin or vice versa?

And would you do double cardan or two joint? I am not sure if I know what difference that would make on performance?

The 3 ton 110 I use has the original factory front shaft and its fine, has seen harder use than most of the land rovers around. You could pull a shaft off a junkyard disco and put new joints in it for almost no money. Between Woods or GBR I wouldn't know the difference, heard good about both guys. If you maintain the vehicle correctly you should be breaking axle shafts first anyway.

If you have a lifted vehicle or outside of factory driveline angles then yes a double cardan (double jointed) shaft is a good idea. Not sure on performance, more weight, possibly more windup as it gets worn over a few years?

The exhaust goes close to the front drive shaft and will bake the grease in the joints over time, plus driving in dirt and water will also take their effect on the joints. Best is to grease them up at each oil change or after an off road romp to keep things moving smoothly. I replaced mine with a stock one with new joints and been working fine. Thats how I found out about keeping them clean and greased.
