Once in over 30 years is forgivable...... let it be a lesson. Keep a spare in the truck. You can buy em at WallyMart. Problem with a tethered cap is it gets in the way of the pump handle, I hate em. Like tying a sucky to a baby bib. I've been going to the same two stations for so many years they know me by my first name. They collect them off the pumps and toss em in a box so I never really loose it, it just takes a small vacation.
I had just replaced it with a new one, ol well somebody got a new cap. I cannot believe I actually closed the lid, locked it and didn’t think about it. I need to reduce my multitasking at the pump!
I did the same about a month ago; drove off and left it behind somewhere between Kansas City and Pittsburg so no chance of digging through a box on the next fill 'er up.
i bought a cap with a tether and drilled a hole for the retaining plug, works like a charm.
got it off Amazon, you know- two day shipping; realized it on the road and had my son purchase it before we ever arrived in PA.
There is a retaining stud on the 'roof' of the cas cap compartment (not sure exactly how to explain it) on my truck. The stock cap (which I still have) is tethered to it.
Believe it or not but when Rover updated the EVAP system one of the things changed was the gas cap. The gas cap from mid '97-'99 had the plastic tether secured by a screw just like all the DII's. The earlier models didn't have the tether, they were just like all the RRC's.
