What should the return line on the fuel pump assembly look like on a 98 D1? Should it drain directly into the the cup on the bottom of the pump assembly, or should it pass through a plastic elbow on the side of the pump?

Reason why I am asking is because I am getting too much fuel pressure. I removed the return line from the elbow and the pressure is now normal. The pump assembly from the tank looks like a pump from a p38 according to google images. I was wondering if there is any difference between a d1 pump and a p38 pump.
