Default had this done today and now....

tranny fluid replaced, 10W30 oil change, front/rear diff and transfer case fluid replaced 80W90.

And now I've got either a head gasket oil drip that's smoking in the engine bay or something burning off, but it's pretty consistent now in that area (left side of the engine if facing in from front), and white smoke coming out the tailpipe.

I don't think it was doing those things prior. This isn't going to go away and burn off right.. Head gasket? Any thoughts?

yeah ok... I'll run it for a while tomorrow and see what happens. I shut it off when the smoke started coming out the tail pipe. I've been reading to many posts in these forums and am now paranoid... Did not see a drip just smoke, that said it's on the opposite side of the engine bay from the oil fill.

Question. Why 10w30? It calls for 10w40 year round, unless you are below 0 F

Yeah, hopefully it's that cold in KY all winter. I did check the work shop manual for viscosity, but clearly did not study it hard enough. I'll change it this spring assuming my engine isn't blowing up.

Transmission fluid silly. As for smoke out tailpipe. Are you sure it's smoke and not just condensation?

And don't worry bout the whole 10w-30/40 thing..

10/30 or 10/40 either one is fine. Just don't use 5w, it's too light. some use 15/40 Rotella.

The oil I just put in was Valvoline MaxLife synthetic blend 10w30. It is really quite now. Walmart had the 5quart container for 16 bucks but only had 10w30. They weere out of the Rotella. Of course with a new filter, you really need 6 quarts not 5. I picked up a quart the next day, but it was 6 bucks. Wish they would put out a 6 quart jug. It sucks to pay so much for a single quart.

The '97-99 DI's take 7 qts of oil.
Buy two 1 gal jugs and just pour out 2 extra qts of the second gal jug.
I keep 2 empty Mobil 1 qt's in my garage and I fill them with Rotella, then I know I have exactly 1 qt if I need to add or to carry with me on a trip just in case.
They have the big fat mouth on them which makes them easy to refill, I stick in a small funnel and fill them from the gal jug.
Also the Mobil 1 qt bottles will sit upside down by themselves in the oil filler without tipping over, pour it in, let it sit for 10 min and you will get every last drop out of the qt bottle.
