Default Headlight Surround Doesn’t Fit. WHY?

I bought two black plastic headlight surround pieces, one for each side. They were listed as specifically for the Disco 1 1994-1999. Neither of them are even close to fitting my ‘97. I have square holes in the body of my disco that seem designed to secure these things in. But my turn signals are too wide and too short to fit in the slots of the piece, and there’s also no hole for the securing spring to go through.

I’m sure we’ve all seen pictures of Discovery 1’s that have these things installed. My suspicion is that they only fit earlier pre 1994 models. Does anyone own a disco with these installed? I’m frustrated, because I love the way these look.

That's an early 89 style front bezel trim piece. The headlights are different, and so are the turn signal lens if I'm not mistaken.

Geeze! Wish I could have known that before. Now I want to trade for an ‘89!

Are there are any other subtle options for headlight trim other than a basic brush bar?

Not trim per-say, but the black housing D2 lights change the look a bit.

You’re talking about these, Logan? and they actually fit without any modification? If so, I’m sold.

YUP! Not the best photo but here they are in mine.
I've got a pair in-stock if you don't have any around you or another source.
They mount the exact same way, same plugs, etc.

Yep D1/D2 94-02 = Headlights are the exact same minus 94-99 D1 are Chrome 100% reflector & 99-02 D2 are Chrome reflectors with a black surround. The 89-93 stuff looks cool, but the lights are different as the trim/grill. All my D1's are sporting 99-02 Headlights as the look is much more modern and clean IMHO.
