you shouldn't need chains ever. Chains are very old and inefficient technology. Top Gear drove across the arctic with snow tires. Granted the tires cost 2,000 pounds each still some nice tires are fine.

Philly got record snows this year, some storms (plural) over 30". My D1 did great with reg road tires. I can't speak to inclines as philly is quite flat, but i do know that i got a little cocky because of just how sure footed the truck was and forgot how heavy they are and how difficult it is to stop them in slippery conditions. I MIGHT have tapped my bumper into someone elses tailgate. oops. So all i would say is dont forget how heavy and resistant to stopping they are in snowy/slippery conditions. Good Luck! and have fun

I wouldn't bother with chains, especially if you're only going to do the front.

If the tires are weak, replace them instead. And be real careful because they are very heavy compared to most other vehicles and somewhat top heavy. Watch out when dealing with steep inclines and do not get it in a situation where one side is higher than the other, you don't want to let it get away from you side over side.

Use the low setting on your transfer case if it is steep to help you keep speed down when descending a steep slope. Snow is usually not too bad, ice is completely different situation. Use extreme care.

Have fun. Post Pis later of your trip.
