Default help diagnosing lack of drive

Hi could anyone help point me in the right direction. I have a 2.5 tdi 1995 disco, this morning after driving for a while pulled out from stopped in first, loud clunck and complete loss of drive and lots of nasty noises when the vehicule moves. I managed to wheel it out of the way and stopped to look under the truck and nothing obviously wrong or leaking so put on the diff lock and nursed it home a few cluncky noises and at one point steering got hard. I am guessing that the front differential has broken. I understand tacling a diff is a specialized job so should be replacing it with a complete reconditioned unit would be better for me as long as changing it is not too difficult ie no special or expensive tools. I am a reasonable mechanic, have done the headgasket steering pump and various bits to it but any advice would be appreciated.
