Default Herky jerky at 1500 RPM every gear & some grinding noise - any ideas?

Hi All,

Sorry to say that I'm not so mechanically inclined - and neither are basically any of the mechanics in the Republic of Georgia where I'm currently based. We picked up a used Disco 1 for $2100 last year and it's had a tonnnn of issues. I'm realizing now that the car was mostly probably used as a donor for another disco and we got the junker. I would normally take it to a mechanic and have them assess it but we had it with a shop for 7 weeks and it came back worse than when we dropped it off. At the same time the car has never let us down despite a bevy of issues. I'd love to get some help / feedback on a few issues and see if I can special order parts or even give specific instructions to a mechanic as to what needs to be fixed.

The most concerning things going on with the vehicle right now are:
1) at 1500 RPM in every gear it feels like something is engaging and disengaging causing the entire car to sort of do a herky jerk motion forward and back. I'm assuming this is the clutch partially engaging and disengaging or perhaps it has something also to do with the turbo engaging and disengaging? I'm not sure though. All thoughts appreciated.
2) Sometimes when shifting into low or high gears (2nd or 5th) it'll do a grinding noise.
3) seemingly no power in 1st gear high until it gets to about 1500-1600 RPM.

All thoughts and feedback appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!

It would help if you list what we are talking about, year, model, options, etc. Not many of the D1 Discovery models had turbos or manual transmissions. There were a few tho.
the jerky motion could be a misfire, as could cause a lack of power too. That could be an injector, spark issue, or even wiring.

Hey Jim! Man you're absolutely right I'm sorry I didn't do that at first! It's a 1997 Diesel Manual Transmission Disco 1.
