Gear noise? T-case? Not sure where to start.
OK - I'll do my best to describe what happened - and what it's doing now.
95 Disco I - 5 speed. Driving home from a fairly long road trip (irrelevant LOL) - going up a good hill, downshift from 5th to 4th and hear a "pop". I felt it more than heard it. Then I hear a noise that sounds something like a low pitch whine.... let off the gas - noise is gone...downshift, still hear it. As I rev the engine, the noise clearly gets "faster"...
I pull over - and manually rev the engine with the throttle cable...no noise. I am still 1 1/2 hours away from home, it's 9:30 at night, so I decide to drive (don't yell at me, I think if it breaks completely I'll part it out, and I needed to get home)
As I'm shifting through the gears, I hear the noise - UNTIL I HIT 5TH GEAR! Everything is just fine in 5th gear. Made it all the way home, no worse for wear, but now I'm wondering what happened, and what I need to fix.
Where do I start?
