but its possible that both of you have been using the wrong wattage bulbs...

i think antichrist mentioned earlier the tail lights are 5 watt bulbs, which is a really low power unit, suggesting to me that anything higher would cause issues.

Both of my License Plate LED's have gone out. Disappointing really because I thought those looked the coolest. Also my City light LED's have gone out. It seems some LED's are better suited to interior use only.
I've seen my share of rovers at the junk yards with the same issue and always the right light.

Default Additional lights?

This got me thinking... Might you be running any additional lighting off that circuit? I am. I have a SPDT switch that toggles between back-up circuit and constant power to power my work light on the rack... Possibly unrelated but food for thought... Hope it helps, Tom

His bulb holder is melting. Overheating would be caused either by too high a wattage bulb, or a faulty connection causing high resistance which leads to heat. Anything up to a 21 watt bulb I don't think would cause problems as the holder is basically the same design/material and I think the wiring is the same size.

Some things that would cause high resistance are loose contacts, corrosion on the contacts and the same two things in the bulb socket.

Bulbs I have now are 21w, should I go lower?

If you're running a 21 watt taillight, yes.
