Hi ALL. I'm just wondering what tire sizes are being used on LR Discovery1, to add more of a 'foot print' without modifying the body. I got a reply from a friend who's using a 315-75-16 option. Any comment on this size and any other recommendations.

 

I sure hope he's not running that size without modifying the body, or he will have some accidental body modifications very soon.

There are a million and one threads on this exact same topic, it has been discussed/debated ad infinitum. However, here are the basics:

Wide tires might look good but the suck gas, destroy your turning radius, tuck worse off-road, and cost more. But hey, pick your poison I guess.

30s will definitely fit.

31s will probably fit, chance of trimming.

32s will fit with trimming and a 1-2" lift.

33s will likely require full cut-out fender flares and/or a significant lift.

Most people will say get a 2" lift (springs and shocks not just spacers) and put on 245/75/16 235/85/16 or 265/75/16

 

I say if you're not going to re-gear and you want a taller and wider tire go 265-75-16 You will have to tril a little but it's not going to be noticable

 

Wider tires suck more gas don't they? And the 265/75 and 245/75 off road have just about the same performance right?

Depends on who you talk to. Wider tires believe it or not do not make a huge difference on gas but the height does because how much the engine has to work to turn it. As far as off road performance people will argue force per square inch vs total contact pattern. Honestly I believe tread and height is what makes the difference in how an off road tire performs. This is why my next tire will likely be a super swamper Q78 or pitbull rocker

 

255/85/16 = 33.06" x 10.04"
235/85/16 = 31.73" x 9.25"
265/76/16 = 31.64" x 10.43"
245/75/16 = 30.46" x 9.64"

Same off road performance? Probably not. Every little bit helps, right? That's why people go to a 255/85/16 vs a 265/75/16.

As to the OP's question. A 245/75/16 is about the biggest you'll get on a stock suspension, and you still may need to trim a touch. There are a LOT of other factors involved in determining what tire you can fit. If you leave your sway bars attached and never go off roading a 315/75/16 could work on a 2-3" lift. On the other hand, Jake is running 35's on a 3" lift but has done a ton of trimming and covered it with flares. But his truck articulates extrememly well. Then there's a truck like mine that runs 265/75/16's on a 2" RTE lift. I did moderate trimming(Camel Cut) and can flex quite well. My truck with open diffs out wheeled a D2 running 285/75/16's and traction control easily.
Like I said there's lots of options out there and lots of things to consider when choosing a tire size.
Bigger is not always better.

 

GEARS!! This is why I told him to run what you're running. If you're truck cant spin the wheel you will be dead in the water.

On a side note, knowing what I know now I would cut and go for a skinny 33" on a 2" lift and no flares if I was not going to re-gear. There is SO much room in the wheel wells as long as you get a body saw or have an extremely steady hand with a grinder you can make it look clean.

There's always D2 fender flares but you can ask Turf how much he likes his now
