Hello guys,
Thinking about pulling a trigger on a 98 LR Discovery. 98k miles, 50th anniversary edition (if it makes any difference).
I took it for a test drive today and noticed a similar problem with transmission shifting that my dad had on his 96 range rover.
Tranny shifts hard with a loud bang. Also when the gas pedal is released it will give off the same bang. My father has the same problem with his 96 RR. Current owner of the Discovery is a 2nd owner for the last 9 years and always had that bang.
My dad always had land rovers and they very much grew on me as well.
I am looking for a reliable DD for this upcoming winter to keep the miles away from my "fun" car.
I am a fairly active member on ls2gto.com forums, so i know how much info car forums like this can provide.
thank you in advance.

You could download the rave cd below in my sig, look in discovery, workshop auto tranny ZF, fault diagnosis, road test
See if you see symptoms there.
If it's a "clunk", I'd be looking at xfer case,u-joints, front and rear diffs for excessive play, I've only heard of one trans going (from pulling semi-trucks)
I've had both, they always shifted beautifully.
luck,greg

reading around ujoints seems to be a do it your self job. how complicated is the transfer case? thanks
I am not very mechanical but i do love working on my own car, even if it takes 3 times as long and req me to go step by step.
Want to see if i can give the price of what i am willing to pay for it in a few days.
p.s.
price of a truck is 5500. If i can fit repairs under a gran i might offer 4500

I have had this same clunk since I bought mine a year and a half ago. Did the trans flush thinking the fluid is causing the hard shift. Not so much. Going to change out my center diff and front diff (already did the rear) oil in the next day or so and will report back to you if it makes any difference. I am thinking I might have a rotary going bad. Will check that out too.
