Lost once again!! Exhaust heat shield, or not...
Okay, I got my new Exhaust in & there's (2) L-shaped brackets with a total of 4 holes in the top of it where it looks like something should be bolted or screwed to the brackets. I went back to the website & found a heat shield that says was used from 95-99 on the D1's that bolts up to the 4 holes. When I called to order one, the sales person said they stopped using heat shields in 96 and went with one attached to the body, but there are the holes! I got it from Atlantic British (these guys are great if you haven't used them yet), so I'm pretty sure it will fit, just not too sure about the need for the heat shield on my 98. Then I think that perhaps this is a universal fit for Discovery 1's with 3.9 & 4.0 engines, so maybe I'm making something out of nothing... I live in the middle of nowhere & would hate to tear (more like destroy by cutting it up into manageable pieces to get it out) the old one just to find that I need the heat shield to install the new one. It's a really long walk to town if I'm on foot Opinion??

Well, this just keeps getting better... Actually had a clear day with no rain or snow & low-crawled under the Land Rover to see what I could see. Well, there's no heat shield on the muffler, so no need for that. However, there's (2) perfectly drilled holes about 1/8" right in the center of the muffler with black soot running from there to the back of the muffler. Although that would explain the exhaust smoke blowing out to the muffler the inspection station told me about, I now wonder why the holes might be there (perhaps high water fording drains??) or better yet, why all of the soot. Anyone care to offer an idea or explanation?? I know I used to bash holes in the back of my Dad's Dodge Dart so it would sound cool, but this doesn't have a Mopar V8

Guess I never noticed them being in the center of the muffler before, and if I did, I definitely never noticed that amount of exhaust gasses (blowing out of the hole straight to the ground in a stream) or such a soot trail coming from the holes either. Perhaps there's a partial blockage down the line somewhere.
