Manual-Trans D1 questions

The r380 world swears by redline mtl. Night and day supposedly.
Anyone think that an additive like Archoil would help for the 2nd gear issues? I know the PowerStroke community swears by the stuff for their 7.3L and 6.0L engines.

Redline mil is supposed to be the go-to oil for the r380. Land Rover themselves put out a tsb changing the oil they recommend you put in the box. The manual with the truck will state it needs ATF but that is incorrect.

>LR later specified MTF-94 as does Ashcroft for their boxes but MTL is what everyone puts in over here.
>Users Manual and auto parts stores will tell you ATF is spec. Technically it works but not as good as MTL or MTF-94. Works in a pinch.
As for additives, poly PTFE is supposedly a godsend for these boxes and the transfer box, friction-wise.

So we have a mystery....my 97 5-spd is younger than #68 of 68
As this is supposedly last 5-speed 97 Disco #68 of 68....(and thus the last manual transmission Land Rover imported to the states EVER. I just got back to the US and remembered this thread and mine appears to be a later build manual transmission 97 Disco.

Drivers (us) door beneath the b pillar and latch.
so, yea I’m now sort of wondering if my truck is actually the last truck with a clutch Land Rover ever imported to the states. If so, that would kick ***. My understanding on the defenders that came over that year all had automatics. I’ve not researched that so wouldn’t plant a flag in it....but, yea.., cool.

95 D1 (11-94 door tag) 5-speed, 4.6 engine, MasterLube pre-oiler, "Tornado" chip, Piper cam.
HD springs front and rear stock height, 190% stiffer front, 230% stiffer rear sway bars.
Michelin 255/65-16 tires. Intake runner extension ending up with max torque at 2,715 rpm's ve 3,100 stock. Injectors replaced with 4-hole injectors a vast improvement vs 80's era Lucas single dribble injectors. Pre-oiler from day one on factory new 4.6 short block.
Head work, port matching with mild porting, Borla cat back exhaust, MagnaFlow cats.
Only fear where to get a replacement 5-speed trans output shaft plus gear in transfer box as it acts like the splines are in sad shape. Too much drive train slop, not the U-joints or differentials. Cold dry ram air intake from behind the left headlight. Many other changes over the years. Automatic D'1's are boring and slow, one needs to "stir the stick".
