Default Master cylinder-cost-replace or rebuild?

I've bled the brakes on my '96 Discovery to the point where all fluid in all brake lines is clear, and still don't have a good firm pedal. I'm thinking it's the master cylinder, as I hear a hiss when I mash the pedal.
My parts guy quoted me $150 for what he can get. Ebay shows about the same, a few for less, with even rebuild kits going for $130. Anyone know of a better price source?

Get a new one.
It is a lot more expensive when the rebuild fails and you hit something or run someone over.

Really a true diagnosis of the problem would help most. My tank seals were leaky and caused soft breaks henceforth my repairs made. I would check all lines for leak or swelling including metal lines then test the unit itself. Diagnose the problem before putting parts on it, saves tons of money in long run. But if unit must be replaced those are decent prices. May check with pt schram or some of the local board members that do parts for other prices. Though the unit is prone to failure which I won't doubt but maybe another underlying problem, and also maybe re bleed system it was open so air may be trapped within system.

I've bled the system to the point where the fluid in all lines comes out clear. I did notice a hissing sound when pumping the pedal, and prior to this, a master cylinder has always been one of the easiest and cheapest parts I've replaced on any car I've owned.

Here's a rebuild kit for the bargain price of only $270. Does anyone see anything in the kit that looks like it cost more to make than the rubber flat washers for a toilet that sell for, oh, 70 cents at my corner hardware store?
