Mean Green Alternator

Even the 120 amp P38 alternator will give you an additional 270 watts. Do you have more than 270 watts of lighting? Well if you do then it's still ok because your alternator isn't nearly used to full capacity most of the time. I routinely draw over 500 watts off my 100 amp alt. I think the main purpose of the MG is for welding.

Winching. Throwing out 220 amps at 1200RPM will mean you can winch like a boss and pretty much eliminate any need for a second battery for winching.

..but ok yeah it would help if winching a lot. I just hope OP does $400 worth of it.

Found this 160 amp on Amazon.
Looks like the right one for my 98' D1, but should the wiring piece for the 160 amp scare me or should I go with the 120 amp part and avoid overkill? I have no winch, bit do have 6 extra fog lights which I use pretty regular that absolutely suck the volts out of my truck with each use (not that I have volts to spare). Never purchased parts from Amazon (tons of other things, but never parts), but the prices seem pretty good. Found, and thinking about adding a hi-torque starter to the order since mine is dragging from time to time and I can bundle shipping to save a few bucks.

Yep, I saw that. The same company has one on ebay and one on Amazon for $68.00 difference. However, the one on ebay reflects 12 volts, while the one on Amazon shows 14 volts with a statement about using 4 gauge wiring. Not too sure if it's a typo between the (2) descriptions or if that makes a difference, but that's the route I'm looking at now.

Okay, got my new alternator in from the link Fish posted, and opened the box. The alternator looks perfect, but there's a tag on the larger (perhaps positive) post on the alternator telling me I need to run an additional 4 gauge wire from the positive battery post to the alternator, but never really says to where. Stupid questions are just floating around my head at the moment, so for once in my life I am going to ask & listen before heading down the newest path to unhappy expenses as I know nothing about vehicle wiring. 1) I can only assume they are referring to running an additional wire from the battery to the larger lug on the back of the alternator & not the actual battery cable itself, but there's already a 4 gauge cable there. 2) In the event they are referring to an additional wire, what's going to happen if I omit that step & run the Disco without it (is that extra wire really necessary?) 3) And probably the dumbest question of all. Won't adding a wire directly from the battery to the alternator drain the battery if the engine isn't running? Thanks in advance!!
