milky rear diff

Default milky rear diff

i have a 96 discovery and the rear diff becomes milky after a few months of driving it. i dont go offroad and i checked the vent tube. seems fine. someone please help if you can

The only way gear oil will go milky is if water is getting into it.
What brand and weight gear oil are you using?

Buy this Breather Axle Rear Remote (Part # FTC2176) - Land Rover axles & casings-cv joints-bearings from Atlantic British because your axle breather is clogged.
The moisture that naturally occurs in the air inside the diff cannot escape and is building up and then mixing with the gear lube.
Mine did the exact same thing.
Replaced the breather and no problems since.
The part that screws into the axle is steel and rusts shut, the tube will look good and you can blow through it if you take that off, but the actual banjo bolt will be rusted on the inside, its just a pin sized hole.

Or you can buy this McMaster-Carr in 1/4" which is cheaper and you can route them into the cab of your truck or up as high as possible just in case. I still need to finish doing my front diff, t-case and trans - remember they all have breather lines too

I thought the axle coolant hose was broken.

You can do one better, buy ice maker water line from the Home Depot, its about $10 for 25', fish tank air tubing works too.
But his problem is not the line, it is the breather itself, the part that screws into the axle.
Because I live in the rust belt I have to remove mine once a year and clear it out, I ream it out by hand with a drill bit, then clean it with carb cleaner, dry and put it back.
Takes about 10min.

Yea but usually the line is clogged if you have been in a mud hole at all and theres no cleaning that stuff out. Yea the valve is an easy fix little carb cleaner and I used a paper clip and it worked great.

Yea words of experience. I went to take my diff plug out one day to check it before a trip and it was pressurized.

I have only fixed the rear one. I ran some of that line from my rear diff up into the cab from the bumper light grommet. I plan on doing the same with the front and other breathers. I am sure the others are clogged after this weekend haha
