Default My 1998 Discovery

Hey everyone. I just bought a 98 Discovery. It didn't run and its a bit rough but that's fine by me. Put in a new fuel pump and it started right up. It has all the common problems...sunroof leaks need to be fixed, ABS light on, looks like it may have a power steering leak(?) but no fluid on the ground.

Next up is brake pads, rotors and lines, and a full fluid change. Some minor items need to be replaced (bumper light broken, mirror, etc).

But overall it's not bad.

My plan is to fix it up for my daughter so she can use it for college during the winter (I gave her my Mazda RX-8 as a first car but it is DEFINITELY not a winter car).

But I'm liking it enough that it may not happen as I may end up keeping it myself. (She may kill me if that happens)

One drive and my daughter decided the 97 was her high school / college ride. Shop manual set is called the RAVE, free download links below.

Thanks all. The FYIs posted have already helped. I downloaded the RAVE manuals. I've need reading through them.

First up is resoldering the rear window circuit board controller. The windows worked then stopped. Tapping on the controller made them work so looks like a bad connection.

I've already read the FYI tips and the brake job and bearings looks tough but I'll give it a try.

I'm no mechanic but I like tinkering so the truck should keep me occupied.

ferragame.....you will definitely be kept "occupied"...If your 98 is anything like mine, this forum will become a familiar place.

Good luck with your new Disco!!

Thanks everyone for the nice words. I'm considering looking for another just for me. I'm considering either a 99 Disco I or an 04 disco II. But first I have to get this one road worthy for the kid.

I had a 2010 or 2011 Range Rover rental earlier this year while in Germany. Very nice but too nice for what I would do with it (off road, load the dogs, and just have fun). But 125 mph on the autobahn was a bit hair raising even at the lowest suspension setting. I was getting passed like I was parked but it was a nice ride.

Yeah. The Range Rover rental was a diesel. Gas mileage was great but of course diesel was like $8-10 / gallon US. Better then a couple of years ago. Unleaded was over $16 / gallon when I was in Paris. No wonder they all drive scooters

Got some parts today and more coming from a forum member. Have to work on the rear window CPU (solder joints), brakes and the cdl lever next (won't go into lock). Then sunroofs. Then......too much to list but at least it is mechanically sound (fingers crossed)
