Default My 1999 Disco turns over, idles, and then dies

Hi Everyone!

Hoping someone has had a similar experience as I have been dealing with. I have a 1999 Discovery 1 that I have been using for camping trips. Over the summer, I lent it to my brother when I went away for a couple months and a few weeks after lending it, he told me that it would no longer start. Today, I went over and tried to see if I could fix it. I started with the easy stuff, changing the battery and the alternator as I knew they were getting old. When we got the two new parts installed, it cranked and turned over but then immediately died. This continued to happen as I tried turning it over.

On what was going to be my last try it turned over and stayed in an extremely low idle without dying. I hit the gas pedal, it took a second and then jumped up to 4 rpm, and then died. I did this once more with the same outcome, and then once more i turned it over and it idled like normal and even drove a couple feet and then returned to idle without dying.

Im not sure if this has something to do with fuel, air leak, dirty connections, or something else, but I am curious if anyone has run into this issue and found a (relatively easy) solution. Tomorrow i’m going back to start the diagnostic process and try and get her running back to normal again. Any advice or tips to find the solution is so greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Make sure the Air Box doesn't have any uninvited guest living in it. Check fuel pressure at the rail, and if possible get some gas in a jar to see if it's got any water in it. IAC can cause it to run/idle crazy, and so can a dead MAF. CPS wiring could also be a culprit. Just check basics and go from there.

I'd start by cleaning the intake around the butterfly valve and also cleaning the IACV. Use some brake cleaner and a tooth brush.

My first guess is that you need a new IACV.
