Im looking after my dads 95 300 tdi discovery right.... it seems to run fine, no obvious symptoms of bad motor, i can hear the turbo working under loads sounds normal i think. but it feels a little weak on hills......
for comparison, I have a 86 hilux with a 2.8 litre natural aspirated diesel. its supposed to have 90 horsepower and about 150 foot pounds of torque. on the hill at my house I can go as slow as I like, and feels like it want to keep accelerating. that same hill i need to get a run up on the disco, not much but it does start losing power at the top.
the 300 tdi is supposed to have 110 horsepower and 250 ft/pounds torque. now I know that the disco is a fair bit heavier. hilux is 1400 kilos, and disco is between 2 ton and 2200 kilos, but the disco motor has so much more torque..... Shouldnt it be able to do the hill better than my hilux?

I have zero experience with the Rover diesel, but all Rovers are slow and feel sluggish.
A dirty air filter or fuel filter can have a effect on power.
But keep in mind your Rover weighs almost twice as much as your Toyota and has not much more power, for it to really feel equal it would need twice as much power as the Toyota.

my mechanic cranked up the injection on the pump, and wow, what a difference.... thing takes off now. revs like a champ to.
tested the hill, its like the toyota now, maybe feels a little heavier of course.
so if your 300 tdi feels slugish try adjusting the injection pump

That massive black cloud you're leaving behind now is probably not good for the environment

A diesel that is tuned correctly will not spew black smoke, but one that has been tuned or turned up or "chipped" will.
