Need help, transfer case removal...
So over a year ago I started having problems with my transfer case. Well last week the rear seal blew out and I hear more notice from it, sounds like bearing noise. time to change. I've got a replacement lined up from a parts truck, and I started pulling it on Sunday, but ran out of light. I've got the exhaust off and the rear driveshaft pulled, front ready to come off, but what's after that? Rave is very vauge on this and I don't quite see how to access the mounting bolts between the trans and transfer case. Any help would be appreciated, this project is a pain so far, and I don't wanna be figuring this out when it's 30 on sat.
They are accessible, I did a t-case swap on a garage floor, not pit or lift. It took around 24 hours of non constant work. You need to remove the console to get to the top bolts. You will also need a floor jack to lift the t-case off the mounts to be able to get it out. A very long prybar also comes handy when it's time to separate the t-case from the tranny. Have someone help you when you take out the old and put in the new, it really heavy.
Six bolts hold the transfer case to the transmission. Four are in the back and two are in the front. You also need to remove the three bolts that hold the frame mount for the case to the frame rail. There are also two 13mm bolts that secure the support running from the front of the bell housing to the right side of the transfer case. You might want to remove the transmission brake assembly to make it easier to back the transfer case off the transmission coupler (the shaft that sticks out the back of the transmission).
As far as the linkage is concerned, yes, it's easiest to remove the center console and all the other parts involved with the center console along with the console top plate. It's riveted in place. Drill out the rivets and use sheet metal screws when you're refitting.
If all you're doing is dropping the transfer case for a replacement, leave the linkage secured to the transmission. Remove the 13 mm nut that secures the linkage to the nipple on the front output assembly of the case. Remove the hi/lo part of the linkage that is secured to the arm extending from the hi/lo cover on the transfer case.
Now, you should be able to remove the case from the truck. Use a big pry bar to move it off the transmission coupler. Be careful, you're dealing with a little bit over 100 pounds of parts that like to cause pain.
