My Dad was a Marine engineer in the Australian navy and I learned a lot of my mechanical skills from him. In fact when I was a little kid about 4 he had just finished cleaning and regreasing the wheel bearings on the old Holden FC and was in the process of reassembling when I came along and hit the front mudgurad with a hammer. That's kids for you!
He always used a little all purpose grease on the threads and mating surfaces of wheel nuts. I've always done the same and never had a problem. They always torque up nicely and undo nicely. Between my Dad and I we have never had a lose wheel nut in 50 years.

I do not use never-sieze on the lug nuts at work. I work at an airport next to the ocean(lots of salt in the air) and see my equipment driving in urea soaked anti-icing agent all the time. I just pressure wash the equipment every 3 months and have never had a lug nut stick. Also never had one come loose. Never-sieze is great if you know you will be going a long time before removing the part. But if you clean the threads thoroughly for the nut and bolt/stub and wash off the dirt, then you should be fine without the use of never-sieze. If you are unsure, then use it. I use it on my personal vehicle for that reason. At work, I know the wheels will come off every 3 months.
