Quick and Easy Lug Nut Cap Removal
Quick and Easy Lug Nut Cap Removal - YouTube
Use a 27mm socket (1-1/16 is too tight) to remove a capped lug nut. Leave the socket on the lug nut. Place a spacer about 30mm in length inside the lug nut. This can be a bolt, steel spacer, 1/4 extension, etc. Thread a M16 x 1.5P bolt into the lug nut by hand. Use an appropriate socket and hand tool or impact driver to continue threading the bolt into the lug nut until the cap pops off. The exposed steel lug nut will now take a 26mm socket (1 inch will not work).
26mm 6-point sockets can be tricky to find. Here's a few sources:

Bill, I was just about to email you this thread! Looks like you found a cheap solution to your lug nut woes. BTW, I'm heading to Troy's this Friday if you're interested.
