Default No 3rd or 4th Gear (Disco 1 AT)

Long time lurker here. I searched all over but could not find the same issues.

I recently inherited (free) a 96 Disco 1 with 173K on the clock. It had a FULLY grenaded transfer case, which I replaced one from a wrecker (not fun without a lift). After finally getting everything back together, I no longer have 3rd or 4th gear. First and second are solid, as is reverse.

When accelarating it will hold second until redline if I do not throttle more than 50%. As soon as I go WOT it will "slip" to redline and re-engage 2nd gear after the tach falls back to 3000 rpms, but never go into 3rd or 4th.

When it "slips" it feels as if you put in the clutch on an MT vehicle. No power to the wheels, but you can hear/see the engine revving up.

At first I thought it might be related to the VSS as the speedo was not working, but i rebuilt that and now have a speedo. No change. Only other issue with the vehicle is P0158 for Bank 2 Sensor 2 o2 sensor.

Last night I changed out the transmission filter and refilled with new ATF. No change

Thanks in advance for you help. Cant wait to hit the trails.

you checked the fluid level in neutral engine running correct?

have you looked at the detent cable at the throttle body see if it is hooked up or looks over tight?

these trans are apparently run on valves that can stick no electronics

in a previous post a guy had good luck dumping sea foam in it drove a few miles and left it set 3-4 days then drain and refill clean and it seemed to work to unstick the valve body

I am sure others here will have some suggestions too

Find a donor tranny while your playing with the Seafoam. The ZF's can be rebuilt but it's cheaper just to find a good used @ $250 and "zip" it in. Trails are still a bit off..... Grab the torque converter off the donor as well, it's cleaner and whatever you DO NOT SLAM IT into the tranny pump which is at the end of the input shaft, they break very easy and then you'll be looking for another donor......rinse repeat.

Thanks I'll do that. Anything specific I should be looking for on the donor tranny besides low miles?

Just that it's a 96 or later, up to 99 1/2.
