Thumbs down OBD-2 scanner problem!!!!

I have a 97 Dicso 1 and it runs horribly, black sut and misefire so i bought a code scanner,

I Bought a TOPTAK QT-680 code scanner, I tried to connect it to my disco 1 and it comes up with an error message stating that it is not connected, but it is getting power from the truck,
PLZ any suggestions would be very appreciated,

The scanner says it will do all makes and models from 96-new

P.s. I have read the user manual and I am doing all the proceedures as stated

Sounds like your OBD port is bad.
Try the scanner on a different car and make sure it works.
