Default OBD II Data Link Connector not wired????

Okay, so this came out of the blue. My "Anti Lock" light has been on and off for a long time, and I decided it was finally time to do something about it. Following all the suggestions for checking the codes with a paper clip I started to realize something was amiss. The paper clip didn't seem to be actually touching anything when I stuck it into the '5' and '15' slots in the data link connector.

So I pulled the fascia to look at the unit from the back, and lo and behold, instead of 16 wires feeding into, it only has seven. In particular, 5 and 15 are not connected to anything. A few inches up the wires, somebody spliced an additional wire each into the number '2' and number '10' pins.

I looked around in there and couldn't see any loose wires or anything.

Does anybody have any idea why someone would do this, or where the missing wires might be located?

I'm very mystified....

Tor

<editing this in> The car is a 97 Disco I, and I've read the codes with an obdii code reader before, so I'm assuming it's OBDII, but maybe there is a chance that it is not? Would an OBDII code reader be able to read off an obdI system?

All us market cars were required to be obdii starting in 1996. Some started early, so you'll see some models of cars that are obdii in 1995.

Okay, so assuming it's an OBD II, why are there only seven (or nine) wires connecting to the data link harness when there are 16 ports on the harness? Shouldn't there be 16 wires coming in? And, more specifically, why is there no wire going to either the 5 or 15 port, which everyone else on this forum has used so successfully to diagnose their ABS codes?

it's possible that not all the pins are used. 5 is a ground, and 15 is the ABS, according to the rave. It looks like 5 should be a "B" (black?) wire, and 15 should be "WK" (White with Pink?). Is there any chance you are reading it backwards, starting at the wrong side or something?

If 5 is ground and 15 is abs could it be an abs kill switch

Jafir is right. Not sure on the wire colors though. Flip the plug over and then count the pins. Happened to me. Once I did that it worked like a champ. When it's installed I think it's upside-down.

doh! <turns red> Yup, you guys are right. It was upside down and backwards from what I expected. Worked like a freaking champ once I got it right! Four codes:FL air gap, RR air gap, FR sensor wire, FL sensor wire.

Cleared them, now I'll go in and look at the sensors, see if I can seat them properly, and then we'll see if the light comes back on.

Thanks!!
