Pinpointing it is the most difficult. Sounds loudest on top of the engine. It used to do it for just a while then disappear. Now it happens all the time. It is louder on long road trips. Is there anyway to test the viscous bearing for the fan?

Bring tools with you, next time it starts making the noise turn it off, remove the belt, start it back up.
Is the noise gone?

When my original alternator went bad the bearings went out, it still charged but it sounded like a rod knock, put your hand on top of it with the truck running and you could feel it knocking.
Removed the belt and spun the pulley by hand and you could hear it knock.
Replaced alt and all was well once again.

Pulled off the fan assy on Sat. started her up and behold! no whooshing noise. The viscous fan clutch is failing and causing the fan to spin too fast. Ordering a new fan clutch today.

Probably going aftermarket OEM. I read the thread on the chevy one but dont like the idea of drilling to fit a new part on my vehicle.

There is a Jag guy on e-bay that sells them for $100. I tried one from Autozone and it was locking up too soon and dragging the engine. I have had one from Captain Jaguar for a little over a year and it has been great.

I felt the same way, but you are only making the hole slightly bigger.
Picture a ring going from a size 8 to a 8.25, you are not making the holes that much bigger at all.
And if you do go that route make sure you get the NON a/c fan clutch, the a/c clutch kicks in all the time and will lower your mpg.

Jag guy has one for $125. $129 is the cheapest I found it on the multitude of rover parts places. Ebay I found one as cheap as $80 plus $10 shipping.

Was it from Miami Rovers?
I originally bought mine from Miami Rovers for $80 with free shipping and it was a severe duty one.
We drove 220 miles all expressway and used a full tank of gas because the clutch fan was locked up the whole time.
And we didnt even have the a/c on because it was cold and rainy.

$50 at AutoZone, 2000 Chevy Express with the 4.3 NON a/c.
