Default oil change problem...please help!

Changed the oil in the D1 today. Its a 96 4.0. I used Rorella 10w 40 and the Purolater monster filter everyone recommended. Well, its leakng bad. Looks to be leaking where the filter meets the pump, but not 100%. I cleaned it off real good to inspect for leaks. When putting the new filter on, it seemed like the filter seal was to big for the pump. Has anyone else had this issue? I'm dripping fresh, gold Rotella all over town.

A) 10w-anything is too thin.
B) Are you sure the old filter seal isn't stuck on the mating surface?

I lied, its 15w 40. I'm assume I'm not dumb enough to have left the old seal on there, but ill be taking the filter off to double check cuz... I tend to do dumb stuff. Niw my clutch oedal is going dead on ne. Sometimes its firm and sometimes goes right to the floor. Oil level there is good, I'm thinking slave cylinder. Ugh

Ummm, doesn't the owners manual for the 4.0 call for 5w-30 or 5w-40 when it's hot?? Isn't that thinner than 10w-anything?

Owners manual, LOL!

Motorvated, I wasn't calling you dumb. I had done a thousand oil changes and the first one I did on our van was bad news. The seal stuck to the mating surface and when I installed the new filter it didn't seal properly. So I speak from past idiocy.

When it is hot you want thicker oil15 w/40

When it is cold you want thinner oil 5w/40
When it is hot the oil will thin, when it is cold out thin oil may be needed for proper lube till engine is to temp

Be sure looking in the book you are reading *F not *C for ambient temp

I second the old filter gasket is there, rover likes to hold on to them

The old oil filter gasket is still in place, it happens.

I use Rotella 5w40 all year, standard size filter, 5, 000 mile intervals.

Ok, thanks guys. I'm going to pull the filter in the AM, try to catch any oil that drains out and check it out. FishEH I know you weren't calling ne dumb, I was saying I'm dumb enough to do that. After working 10 hours over night with an hour drive each way. .. I'd bet the old seal is in there! Dang it

Turns out its not the filter, but I'm dripping a ton of oil; enough to where I can't srive it until its fixed. Its hard to tell what's leaking, but its coming from up high and my starter is soaked in oil. Just changed the front main sealand that area is dry. Upper oil lines maybe?
