Default OK, cheap lift/fj80 coils

SO with much experimenting I have come to this conclusion. REAR FJ80 coils do not achieve any lift for a D1. Front FJ80 coils however lift the front of a D1 3", they lift the rear of a D1 2". This is what I did to get a nice level 2" of lift for $50.00..........I did the cheap bastard trick and put stock rear D1 coils on front of my D1 and put the front FJ80 coils in the rear of my D1. Now I have a nice riding, level 2" of all coil lift, no spacers needed. Now I can get 1" spacers and install all the way around for 1 more inch if I choose. So to sum it up for 2" of lift

1. Stock Front FJ80 coils in rear of D1
2. Stock rear Disco 1 coils in the front of D1

Walla, 2" lift, rides nice, shocks dont bottom out. All you gotta do for this is to flip the REAR spring plate(2 bolts) to accomodate the tighter bottom coil of the fj80 spring.

So with this set-up does it matter what year FJ80 the coils come from. I found a guy parting out his 91 FJ80 and he still has the front coils.

Good to know. I'm a cheap basterd as well! But Doing this if I go wheeling I'll have to change the shocks and have longer brake lines.

Theres plenty of brake line left, I wouldnt worry about it. I flexed mine completely and still had some slack. Shocks are probally your limiting factor so by getting longer ones you will get a little more flex most likely, but mine flexed pretty dang well with the stocker shocks.

quick tip.....on your front there is no need to COMPLETELY remove your front shock to get coil out. If you un-do the lower shock bolt only you can collapse the shock upwards and pull your coil out without removing the entire shock, this saves you from having to feed the shock up through the shock tower, I was by myself and this was a pain. The second time around I just un-did the bottom of the shock.

one more thing................when your axle is drooping completely to expand the coil as far as possible to get it to drop out DO NOT HAVE YOUR HAND INSIDE THE COIL WHEN YOU REMOVE THE SHOCK BOLT. The shock has a tendancy to snap up and take most of the skin off whatever finger is in the way, ask me how I know

All I can tell you is that the front FJ80 coils will have one end that tapers down(thats why you gotta flip the spring plate). Also the stock fj80 coils were about 2.5" - 3" longer than the disco coils were but they are not as tightly wound. Have fun. Took me about 2 hours the first time and about 1 hour the second time to swap everything around by myself.
