Someone replaced the left head..... hmmmmm further tear down revealed a lovely bolt stamped into the #5 piston!! Someone dropped a bolt into the engine, then apparently ran it & then realized their mistake, and only replaced the head with the damaged valves & they just left the piston alone.....

New piston is on order, new lifters, HG job, and I’ll be inspecting the bottom end tomorrow.

Would really be awesome if this 95 D1 has just been needing TLC on #5 since the MAJOR boo boo.

Well I ran out of time up in Austin. I tore the engine down, I found the issue with knocking, and we ordered a new piston from Atlantic British only to receive a piston that looked like something Jack Dawson had in his hands down by the Titanic (Big orange rusty blob)....... That delay caused me to leave it yet again up in Austin. AB did refund the $$$ but it stunk that I couldn't get it all put back together. In the mean time I removed the bad piston and found the top piston ring broken in half, along with the oil ring. I also tore the heads down, cleaned them, cleaned the valves, and did a complete valve job along with new seals.

We are 99% sure the old gal is gonna run like new once it's all back together with a new set of lifters, new piston, HG's, and a valve job. The inside of the engine was extremely clean and showed no signs of wear. While it was up on the lift we checked it out and the only thing that could use some attention before the drive home is the LF Swivel Ball preload. Besides that she's in great shape. I'll hopefully head back up there on the 13th and finish it up.

Went back up to mess with the 95 D1 & she is alive and running well! Engine knock is totally gone, and we’re just messing around with some small stuff now. The radiator is seeping a little so that will need attention. The fan clutch was replaced, and so was the belt tensioner pulley.

LF swivel ball preload was interesting.... Someone had torn it apart, and whenever they put it back together they left out 2 small flat roller bearings.... So no matter what you did with the shims the swivel had tons of movement. We looked on the RAVE Disc & on the parts break down was the answer. Dug around and we were able to find the 2 bearings we needed. Slapped it back together & it’s now spot on! Some people just shouldn’t work on cars lol.

The 95 is finally at my house! I went up and grabbed it right before the severe weather hit last weekend in TX. Of coarse my best friends at Austin Roverworks had made room and stuck it inside their shop. I had a great drive home in it and it ran excellent. The ride reminded me of an old 70's Caddy as it floated along. The coil springs were totally shot! I was given a free set of OME 761/764 coils so that was the first thing I installed. The ride is now perfect! It was SO nice messing with a TX LR with zero rust. I fixed a few misc vacuum lines and noticed I had a coolant leak somewhere near the back corner of the engine. Tracked it down to 2 loose heater hose clamps & that was all I could get around to last weekend.

Today I didn't have any calls in my area so I got to attack some of the things I knew needed some TLC. Both Aux Efan's were dead, and I already had a spare set from a 96 Corolla. Got those installed and it should be good to go. I then installed a 120AMP Alternator from a 98 P38. I didn't swap out the pulley but instead swapped out the tach in the instrument cluster as I had a spare gauge cluster from a 98 D1. So now the tach reads properly with the smaller pulley on the P38 120AMP alternator. I also replaced several burnt out bulbs in the gauge cluster.

I had bought a 4 core Aluminum Radiator, but after getting the 95 D1 home I discovered the radiator actually was not leaking and the coolant I was told about leaking had to be residual as the radiator is bone dry. I'm going to try and lower the fuel tank and replace that 3/4 vent line and that should take care of it mechanically.

Totally understand. I found some time to tinker with the white LR3 this weekend. Going to get the new to me 06 in the garage this week so I can sort the trans and suspension.
