Ordering shocks, need some help
So while filling up the tires today I noticed the rear shocks are totally trashed. I'm more then likely going to order a set of 4 but seem to have trouble with the fitment. Some sites say 94-96, some say 89-2000, some say that RR classic, Discovery 1 and Defender are all the same. I need them for my 98 Discovery so I want to be sure which years cross over. Summit Racing has the Pro Comps (yes I know but they are cheap) for dirt but they say they only fit Discoverys up to 96. Same shock on another site says it fits 89-00. So I guess in short, even though Summit only lists Discovery 1 shocks up to 1996, will they fit a 98? I'm almost positive they are the same but would hate to order them and find out they dont fit. Also if anyone knows of something similar in price to the Pro Comp shocks that are better I'd love to hear your input. I dont have $500 to drop on a set of shocks and they are going on a bone stock vehicle that never gets beat on anyway. Just need basic cheap shocks that will work on a daily driver.
If you plan on keeping it stock just go to the local auto parts store and grab a cheap set. NAPA used to have Monroe shocks for around $50 each and also had some cheaper sets. After my experiance with ProComps I wont recomend them to anyone.
I go in the other direction, you have a totally shot set of coil springs under a top heavy Disco, if you are not going to change out the coils also, at least put on a set of strong, high end shocks like Old Man Emu or Bilsteins, that can control some of your trucks sway and bouncing around.
Any D1 set of shocks and or coils will work on your truck.

Since yours is one of the years that DI and DII overlap, that is probably the reason that you see the misleading listings from site to site.
I would tend to listen to Mike viewpoint. I know that my 97 had the original worn out springs as well as totally shot shocks. It was sagging badly. I got lucky and a local LR club member that had owned several different Discoveries over the years sold me a set of the OME rear HD coils (2 inch lift) for a really low price and came over to help me with the installation. We switched the original rears into the front position as the rears are longer than the fronts, put the pair I got from him (new, never been installed) on the rear of mine.
I did buy the set of four ProComps from RN. So far they have done fine, but I rarely off-road. I would like to hear about the problems others have had with them, like Long Haul.
The difference between my old worn out stuff and the above is dramatic, even though I reused the orignal rears on the front. I have not had a problem with them yet either. I was told this is a common practice, but do it at your own risk.
Buying a good set beats using the cheapest and the worn out as well.
One things you might consider is the bargin bins at places like Rovers North. They usually have a set of springs with cosmetic issues at marked down prices. And they always have the correct fit for our Rovers. Would not hurt to look and see.

My first set of Procomps I installed lasted 3 weeks before 3 of them started leaking, they got replaced under warranty. I put on a full set since they (local off road shop) told me to replace them all, went off roading that weekend broke one rear the eyelet broke off the body, no biggy got another pair. Went off roading the next weekend after that with new rears and the left front blew out and the right front is so locked up I cant even move it in any direction. At this point the shop wont replace them any more so I bought another set for the front, they lasted about a month went to get inspected it wouldnt pass they were bad again. So finally I got pissed off and dropped the coin on a set of Fox's and been happy since.
Maybe I had bad luck or a bad batch who knows? But the ride with the Fox's are 100 times better on and off road handling and the ride IMHO.
All D1 shocks will fit.
When you say trashed, what do you mean? Leaking oil? Bashed tube? Worn bushings?
If the first then yeah, they need replacement. If the later, you can replace just the bushings. If the second, that doesn't mean they are bad.
If you're not sure, remove them and test them to see if they actually are bad.

I bought all four of my Gabriel shocks from AutoZone 4 years ago, $110 for all four with a lifetime warranty.
They are still on my truck, with my original springs and my truck rides just fine, even off road.
I dont rock crawl, I do have a ARB winch bumper with no winch and my truck still sits level, the only problem I have is when my gas tank gets below half the @ss of my truck gets light.
Your springs are going to be fine for what you do, just go to your local autoparts store and buy whats in your budget.

Caved and ordered a full set of Pro Comp ES9000. Found a deal on 4wheelparts.com I couldnt pass up. As much as I'd like something like OME or Terra Firma, $400+ in shocks on a stock beater is just pointless. All I can find at the local parts stores is Bilstein which are over $100 each and the Monroe shocks which were still more pricey than the Pro Comps and had to be special ordered. They seem to be in the same price range as the Rancho, Superlift, Skyjacker etc. so I'm sure they will be fine, especially for just driving around on the surface streets. If they fall apart, you guys get to say "we told you so"
