Exclamation Over-heating help

This is my 1st post and maybe this subect has been previously discussed at length...but! I am frustated to point I am willing to walk away from this car. Everyone I talk to says over-heating is a common problem. If so, why are there so many recommended remedies? It has to be systemic for such a common problem. Head gaskets? When this problem first started I was going to replace the thermostat but it had been removed. Bad sign. I am thinking about replacing the motor but I may get into the same situation. Is it reasonable to consider re-powering with another brand of motor? Why hasn't Land Rover provided help? This is rediculous!

We all understand your frustration. Take a deep breath and let the geniuses on here help. They are going to need to know mileage on the truck, symptoms, service you have done, and what you have done to remedy the problem with the overheating. What have you replaced, what temps are you running, etc. Owning an LR is a sickness, you just need the right medicine, so don't walk away yet. Wait for some help.

For proper cooling, you need 2 main things. Coolant flow and air flow. Now if your thermostat is gone, you probably have good coolant flow. But if you're radiator is clogged, maybe not. Does it over heat at idle and while driving? Or only one or the other? If it overheats at idle, but not while driving down the road, you probably have a bad fan clutch. If it overheats during both, maybe a clogged radiator.

The waterpumps in these have a metal impeller blade, meaning the pump *usually* goes bad by leaking or ruining a bearing, but not by not pumping coolant. So if it's not making noise, and ain't leakin', your pump is probably ok.

If I was in you're spot, I think the fan clutch and radiator would be the first two things I would look at being wrong.

We need to know the year and miles on the truck.
How long have you owned it?

It is a 1999 with 150000 miles. The engine was replaced under warranty by the original owner at about 30000 miles. I drove mine 6000 miles before the problem started.

We still need more info.
What exactly is it doing and when?
What have you done so far if anything?

Some thoughts:
Or IMHO:

The majority of the people who buy these things new take them to the dealer during warranty (or duration of lease)

After that, if they keep it, they tend to neglect them as the repairs can be expensive.

People like me buy them cheap because we can repair them ourselves.

The overheating would be less an issue if the previous owner had stayed up with the maintenance, in too many cases they didn't.

What I don't like about the cooling system is the factory temp gauge doesn't reflect overheating until it's ready to puke.

Several of those puke sessions is second only to running out of oil on these aluminum engines.

All of us should buy decent gauges on our first trip home with one of these.

There, I feel better

luck,greg
