Default Plastic Drain Plug

Pulled in the driveway to find the Disco hissing out some coolant today. Popped the hood to find a tiny stream shooting out the base of the radiator plug.

Read the warning that says "don't remove plug when hot." and waited for it to cool down.

Tried to gently remove the plug with a socket and it snapped right off.

The plastic is vulcanized (I think that's a word) as it is really brittle.

Called Napa and O'reilly but they have no listing. Dealer has to order. Are these universal to anything else? Want to drive the truck tomorrow.

I would ask why these are plastic but I guess it has lasted 22 years.

If you want to avoid the plastic plug there are aftermarket brass replacements available.

Brass plug. Make sure to buy the o-ring too.

If you go with an aftermarket plug, make sure it has the correct thread, I believe it is a 1/2 BSPP thread.

Needed to drive the truck this weekend so I gave up on the auto parts stores and took my chances at the Joliet, IL U-Pull lot.

They had a 98 Disco listed as being pretty fresh in the lot.

Sad to see it in this state. 184k miles and seemed pretty well taken care of.

Pulled the drain plug, coin box (mine cracked) a bunch of switches (seat heater, fog light, cruise control, recirc, AC, cruise control), and this sweet 50th anniversary badge that my 98 doesn't have all for $22.

Keep thinking that I should have pulled more of it.

By all means get rid of that plastic plug. Destroy so no future Rover driver can discovery it. I recall the day when mine broke like in the above image.
Make sure to get a replacement with the gasket. I think I picked up my replacement at O'Reilys

sweet truck!! I would have pulled a lot of parts off it if I was there, but then I am putting a truck back together... the rear tail light bulb holders (brake lights) are worth gold!!
