Default Prospective buyer

Hey Guys,

New here and a prospective buyer of a 99 DiscoveryI with 58k on the odo.

I've been browsing around the forums for about a month now and haven't see too much to scare me off of the D1. Just wondering if there are any major mechanical issues that could crop up. (there dont seem to be from i have read, but i figured i would ask the group) Are head gasket problems a common thing on a truck of this vintage?

Ive seen the posts regarding the 03 D2's with the death vin and there also seems to a lot of talk of head gaskets on the other model year D2s as well. Are there similar issues with the D1 from 99?

Sorry to be asking all these noobie questions first time out and thanks in advance for any help

Adam

Let me tell you that it takes some big b.. to join this pack. Once in, you'll never leave. Like the ¨Hotel California¨ LOL This trucks compete with your wife for time and attention.
I am the proud owner of a 1997 DI, with 158K and running strong, lots minor issues during the years (mostly electrical), but nothing to do with the power train. Most horror stories here are with the DII, but as I said, they keep em.
Go for it.

Some say yes, some say no. They can be done at a shop for $1K or under $250 if you are handy..

Read the "new to you" link on the tech sticky. Plan on changing all of the fluids and parts on that tab. 58K is really low mileage and 60K is the Major service...

Did the whole 60k Service by myself, I'm 16 haha.

And expect to cash out about $250 like okdiscoguy said.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm not new to quirky vehicles. I put a triumph spitfire back together this past winter/spring. Ive been looking for something different for awhile now. Ive owned jeeps and blazers and 4runners (never should have gotten rid of my full size 81 cherokee).
From what im hearing here it sounds like its safe to say that if you can do the proper maintenance and aren't completely clueless these can be pretty reliable vehicles?

Leadfoot i see you are from central IL. Bloomington here.

Hey, if you are in Bloomington, then by all means buy the LR. It would be good to have a club member close by. Count on my for any weekend job. I got tools and most of the time know what to do with them
My LR has never been to a shop. Me and my kids handle it, so sure with your experience you´ll have a fun car to drive.
Im in Peoria (Germantown Hills)

As another new (d1) owner Id say go for it, everything is pretty DIY and there are lots of great resources. Its a nice change from sports cars for me - lots of room to work on things!

Watch out for the coolant hose, mine didn't want to come off. And when you change the transfer case oil, the hose that blocks your way is bendable

If you get the rover and do the 60k yourself you will know what I'm talking about haha
