On your way to your mechanic take the long way. drive it for about 45 minutes to an hour to let everything warm up. You may find weird noises, bad vibrations or warning lights appearing which may have been covered up by the dealers preparation for resale.

Make sure the check engine and the service engine light come on during the bulb check.

Stop the presses...I found a 1999 I think its a DII though. Anyway, 114k, one owner and good service records in Carfax. However it was involved in a minor accident with a guard rail in 03. It's at a used car dealership and they are asking $5500. If this is confirmed to be a DII did the 99 come with the CDL? It visual looks like the DI accept it has a different motor. Also, relatively speaking is this one as desirable as the DI? Again, thanks for any input.

New info on the 98 Disco...as I was taking the truck to my mechanic, 40 min drive, the a/c stopped blowing cold and the next thing I notice was the temp gauge moving rapidly to hot. I was doing about 65-70 mph, so I slowed down to about 55 and the guage dropped to normal. I immediately exit the freeway and turned around to take it back. I was about 15 miles away from the dealership and the temp guage went hot twice before I returned it. I told the saleman that something came up and that I will reschedule the inspection. My search continues...

Good thing that happened so soon, that's probably why they have it.

There was a 2004 G4 Discovery in a thread on the DII section. If you can afford something like that, ultra low miles fully equipped that sort of thing may be better for your needs.

Good luck with your search, look them over like you would a new girlfriend, top to bottom, underneath as well as inside and out.

There is a thread here with the differences.. easiest is the brake lights are higher on a D2. Closesly related, but you will have traction control on a D2 (good and bad if it has problems), and the CDL can be locked up to mid 2001, but you have to buy a shifter from a D1 or a 2004.

I know you said you were looking for a Disco, but here is a sweet 1996 Range Rover 4.6 with same owner last nine years that might be a good buy:

And a 95 Disco with low miles:

NO!!!
That is the P-38 RR, it is more trouble prone than the DII.

Sounds like it needs a new radiator, hopefully you didnt drop a cylinder liner in the truck when it overheated.
If you let the temp gauge get into the red that engine may be toast.

Spike I think the dealer was trying to slip one past our good friend here and it has probably been overheated several times and they are just trying to find a sucker. I don't think he did anymore damage than has already been done to it. Plus he didn't buy so if the dealer is trying to be crooked then that get what they deserve if it did slip a liner. I hate crooks.

Actually, when I told them how far away my mechanic was they told me that there was a regulation that prevented them from allowing the vehicle to go outside of 20 miles from their location. I told them that I wouldn't buy the truck unless I had my mechanic, that I trusted, do the inspection. Then they said they will only let it go that far if they get their asking price becuase they know the vehicle is mechanically solid. I told them if you feel that confident in the truck and my mechanic tells me the same thing then I would give them their asking price. I only agreed because I knew that there was going to be some issues, I just wanted some bargaining power to do some negotiating. Well...you already know the end of the story.
