Question Quick question - Cooling

does 98 disco use r12 refrigerant or R-134a? What are my chances its just a recharge and not a leak/something bigger? thanks.

r-134a for sure

Its not blowing cold?

Is the a/c clutch engauging?

A/Cs rarely need a recharge. If its not working its either compressor or leak.

not sure about the a/c on discoverys, but on most vehicles the a/c compressor wont come on if the refridgerant is low. There is usually a low pressure switch you have to jump to make it come on to accept freon. However if it needs freon you have a leak.

the a/c compressor is farthest to the left as you lift the hood. With the a/c off Start the engine and notice that the pulley is turning... now turn on the a/c( and the fan) and now the center of the compressor should be turning also....as well as the cooling fans in front running also....

Check BOTH cooling fans and make sure they are both turning. If it is hot out and only one is turning, it won't cool as well.

Are you getting any cool air?

so i checked everything, turns out the a/c compressor (the one connected through pully?) is not spinning in the middle, also one of the cooling fans spins very slow/not at all. Do i need a new compressor, or is it just locked up somehow? the previous owner lived in the snow probably never used the a/c.

could be a few things, does the A/C light come on (on the button)? the compressor should make a "click" when the clutch on the pulley locks up. and the fans should come on quite audibly, you can hear them over an idling engine. for about $20 you can buy a can of refrigerant to refill the system, if you get one with a gauge you can check the pressure level to see how much refrigerant is in the system.

2X on getting a kit with a pressure gauge..........the a/c will not come on if there is insufficient charge in the system...but you certainly dont want to over-do it either

Yes the a/c light comes on but nothing happens what so ever, I tried flipping it on and off for 30 minutes on the free way to maybe get it going but nothing. Would all these symptoms point to not enough charge in the system because that would be relieving. Can someone run me through how to charge a system?
