Well, the gearbox is back together, mated to the bellhousing, and shifts cleanly on the stand. Tomorrow I plan to push the disco back onto the lift, and prep it for the gearbox installation. Wish me luck.

I drove it for a few days, and it seems fine. I was honestly expecting more drama.
