Does anyone have any idea where this unrythmic noise is coming from?

my timing belt came of a couple months ago while driving super slow like walking speed. the mechanic (not specialised in landrovers) fixed it after I thought I completely broke the engine but it’s still running! The only problem is this noise now. The noise is the loudest around 1000 rpm. My theory is push rods and valves (I hope that’s the correct words) or maybe the timing belt is just not correctly adjusted ? Did anyone experience this before ?

No timing belt on your D1. Maybe timing chain? Or accessory drive belt (which doesn’t get timed)?

 

Guessing you are talking about the drive belt on the front of the engine. There is probably something worn out that caused it to come off. Did the mechanic replace the tensioner, or some other part? Try removing the belt to spin all the pulleys by hand, if one is loose or sloppy that might be the problem and needs repair or replacement.

If the belt comes off, the engine should be shut down right away because the water pump will stop, then the engine can overheat. When the engine is cold, with the belt removed, it can be started for a short time to hear the engine parts separately (valves, rockers, push rods, lifters) by eliminating noises from the accessories and fan, but don't run it too long and overheat (for example less than a minute).
