Default rear cargo door latch

so again I opened the rear door to remove some tools, closed the door and now it doesn't open. I removed the Land Rover emblem and gave it a good soaking of penetrating oil and wait to see if that works. (usually does) My question is... WHY!! should I work on replacing the mechanism inside the door? I'd like to keep it working but it just plain doesn't want to co-operate sometimes.

Any suggestions?

Being that it's cold outside, it is very possible while trying to open the door one of the link rods came out or the spring in the latch broke. Not uncommon for these old parts to get stressed in the cold.

What do the door handles feel like when you lift them, any tension or do they just have no resistance? When you lift up on the exterior handle does it stay up?
Not the best video, but you will get a real good view of what is going on inside the hatch door >

Wear and tear. Wear and tear. Mine did the same. So I just replaced the actuator, latch and outside handle all in one shot. Cost a few bucks but never a problem again. Word to the wise if you start disassembly, take lots of pics FIRST and be aware of the little circle clip that holds on the outside key lock rod- that sucker WILL shoot off upon removal if not secured. And it will FLY!
Be prepares to lose rod link clips. They break, fall into impossible places, etc. Part # BRC1393. Look like:

This happens in warmer months too. After sitting overnight, door works just fine now. like I said, this has done this before. If I spray penetrating oil in the oval, let it sit overnight, and it works for a few months or so. been doing this for 3-4 years now. Always acts up when I need the door to take something out.

outside latch feels like it isn't connected. After lubing and leaving it sit, feels normal. kind of like something is not falling in place to be able to move it. might be time to tear it apart and see what could be the problem. might have to wait for a warmer da... only 21 degrees out right now.

I'll take 2. one for each fender. Should work well to open any parking spots where someone is using two places..
