I can only open the rear hatch from the inside by lifting up on the lock while pulling the handle...it gets a little old after a while!
Anyone else have this problem that can lead me in the right direction?

Pop off the Land Rover emblam on the external handle. Then clean and lubricate the mechanism that is exposed - that should resolve your issue!
If not - it should expose the component that is in need of repair.

I've read about doing this and wondered if it might help my problem. What do you recommend for cleaning and lube for this?

 

I used a stiff nylon brush to get most of the crap off mine, compressed air to finish up.

For lubrication - graphite - anything else will attract dirt and dust and cause you to re-do this again and again.

If you dont mind doing it again and again, WD-40 worked on a friends who refused to wait for me to bring the graphite to him!

Sounds good. That is the 2nd shout-out i've gotten for graphite! I will let you know...hopefully soon.

 

i use silicon based products . you may need to work the handle for a minute or so and keep spraying it.

 

I completely agree on the need to "work it" to get it functioning again.

Have you had any build up issues with the silicone sprays?

 

negative. i have with other petreoleum based lubricants.

Thanks for the info! Sometimes the graphite can be hard to come by. Glad to know there is an alternative (cheaper to boot) that does not carry the negative consequences the petroleum products do.

I find the silicon functions better in the wet cold environment I live in than graphite does.
