If not - it should expose the component that is in need of repair.

I've read about doing this and wondered if it might help my problem. What do you recommend for cleaning and lube for this?

For lubrication - graphite - anything else will attract dirt and dust and cause you to re-do this again and again.
If you dont mind doing it again and again, WD-40 worked on a friends who refused to wait for me to bring the graphite to him!

I used a stiff nylon brush to get most of the crap off mine, compressed air to finish up.

Gotcha.
Thanks for the info! Sometimes the graphite can be hard to come by. Glad to know there is an alternative (cheaper to boot) that does not carry the negative consequences the petroleum products do.
