Default Retrofit Sunroof D1

I feel a little left out on the interior front. My truck is a '96 D1 and It is the ONLY rover I've ever seen with the grey cloth interior. Really would have preferred the tan leather but the truck was in too good of condition to say no. This also means I have no sunroofs. Retro fitting all the tan interior would be an absolute ***** of a job, but I am considering doing the sunroofs. I can buy them from Roverlandparts.com.

What are you guys thoughts? I've heard that a lot of guys have had leaking issues. Something that I could address during the retrofit?
I've also heard they are pretty useless and don't really open very far. Not sure if there is any truth to this one though.

Since it seems EVERYONE has them except me, hoping to get some thoughts.

Cheers guys.

I have them, all they are good for is a sunburnt bald head.
I have opened mine once, during the test drive to see if they worked...that was over 4 years ago.
Dont do it man!!!

God I love this forum. Truck is 15 years old and I always get 15min responses. Still a very active community.

I hear ya mate, it sounds like a waste of time. I've just always loved the idea of wheeling in the bush or the beach, windows down, sun roof open, some good tunes, then a beer around the fire place. They just add to the "atmosphere" if you will, as stupid as that may sound. I'm living in Canada these days so we don't get a lot of sun. I want to get every inch that I can, while I can.

I'm not sold on doing it yet though. Just kicking the idea around.

Removed my 97D1 sunroofs and installed them in my 99D1 with no leaking issues. Use alot of RTV. They look good and perform excellent. If you need any insider tips just PM me.

Good to know. How did you tackle the electrical? From what I can gather there is a Control Module and then just the switch pack. I took a look at my blank slot and it doesn't appear to be pre-wired (I could be wrong).

If you do decide to tackle this, make sure you build in slider type closings, vs the mesh with the hook, hooks break and the sliders actually dampen the sound a bit, i.e. d2.

I Bipassed the control module and used the CD changer for power. Seeing that I do not use the CD changer anymore. I can send you the switch wiring diagram that I did if you want. PM me if you want the diagram.

I tried that once, bunch of friends and I were in the woods in my Montero, sunroof open, windows down...drove through some thick brush and then the truck was full of spiders, ants and other bugs.

Cruising the beach it would be nice, but honestly how often are you actually going to drive on the beach?
In sand dunes you are going to get a lap full of sand.

Not trying to be a downer, just giving you things to think about.

Way to be a buzz kill.

In all seriousness though, you've got some valid points. The more I thought about it, i usually have a kayak strapped to my roof as well. Really not sure if it is worth the effort for the small amount I may use it.

LRD2&ME.

I appreciate the offer mate. If I change my mind I'll definitely drop you a line and grab those wiring diagrams. For now though, I think I'll put it on the back burner.

Have you considered an aftermarket sliding sunroof? Shouldn't have any leaking issues and you also would have an original template to use to cutout the roof and can wire it as a separate circuit and mount the switches anywhere that's convenient.
